What comes to mind when you hear the word “culture”? How can we define such an abstract concept?
In AFS, we like to use metaphors to help us understand culture. Four metaphors that we use are: the iceberg, the onion, the tree and the sand dune.
Read more about each metaphor by clicking here or downloading it below. Download the article in Spanish, Portuguese, Danish or Turkish here.
After reading the article, reflect on the following:
- Why is it important to understand your own culture?
- What are some visible artifacts of your culture, and what values do they represent?
- How might your iceberg differ from your neighbors and other people in your community?
- What would your AFS student's cultural iceberg look like?
